The goal of this article is to examine the ethnic roots and cultural association of Nezami Ganjavi, one of the greatest Persian poets. It is of course well known that Nezami is a universal figure, but there are two reasons to examine his ethnic and cultural associations.
The first reason is that it helps us understand his work better. We provide exposition of rare sources (such as Nozhat al-Majales) which are crucial for the study of the 12th century region of Arran and Sherwan. Topics: Nezami Ganjavi, Ganja, Nizami Ganjavi, Persian literature, Nezami Ganjei, Khusraw and Shirin, Leyli. On the Linguistic Turkicization of Azerbaijan, Arran and Sherwan there has not been any detailed study (for example a book or a Ph.D. Thesis) as far as I know.
The work of Kasravi although a good start needs much more work since much new evidence has been unearthed since his demise. Three drawbacks I have seen with regards to currents studies are: Authors have lumped Azerbaijan, Arran and Sherwan together although Turkicization occurred differently and at different pace in these areas. Topics: Arran, Sherwan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Pahlavi language, Iranic languages, Pahlavi, Parthian, Kurdish. This study, which appeared as Chapter 12 in Volume 1 of the Cambridge Ancient History Egypt and Babylonia to 1580 B.C. (Cambridge, 1928), was written by the distinguished historian S. Chapter 12 'The Sumerian Revival: The Empire of Ur' includes: 1. Ur-Engur and Dungi; 2.
Lagash and Other Cities of the Empire: Sumerian Liturgies, The Principal Cults; 3. The Eastern Provinces; 4. The Northern and Western Extension: Ashur, Subartu, Cappadocia; 5. The Decline of Sumerian. Topics: History, Ancient, Mesopotamia, Mesopotamian, Sumeria, Sumerian, Ur, Ashur, Subartu, Urartu. Written by the great historian Hagop Manandian/Manandyan this study (Leipzig, 1897) examines an invaluable medieval Armenian work known as the History of the Aghuans (or History of the Caucasian Albanians) attributed to Movses Dasxurants'i (also known as Kaghankatuats'i). Manandian reviews Aghuan secular and church history based on this and other sources in 61 pdf pages.
